Media Availability: Reaction to New IOM Report on Medicare Pay-for-Performance

Alliance of Community Health Plans’ CEO, Jack Ebeler — Media Availability onThursday, September 21, 2006 following Release of Institute of Medicine Report,Rewarding Provider Performance: Aligning Incentives in Medicare.

What:      The Institute of Medicine (IOM) will release a report laying out a series of recommendations to Congress on implementing a pay-for-performance system in Medicare.  ACHP strongly supports pay for performance for health plans and advocated for the provision in the Medicare Modernization Act authorizing this IOM report.

The IOM report will be released at a public event on Thursday, September 21st at 11:00 am, in the Lecture Room of the National Academy of Sciences Building, 2101 Constitution Avenue, N.W., in Washington, D.C.
When:    Media Availability – Thursday, September 21st from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EDT.

Who:      Jack Ebeler, President and CEO, Alliance of Community Health Plans, will be available to discuss the new report and answer questions from the media.

Why:       In the wake of rising health care costs and evidence of wide variation in the quality of care that patients receive, policymakers are focusing on strategies to measure and improve health care quality, including changing the Medicare payment system to better align payment with quality.  This report builds on previous IOM recommendations supporting performance measurement, and follows legislation that passed the Senate in 2005 which would have created a Medicare pay-for-performance program for health plans, hospitals and physicians.  ACHP strongly supported the creation of the IOM panel that is releasing this report, and has worked with Congress over the past three years to move Medicare toward pay-for-performance.
