Mary Brainerd, Chair, ACHP Board of Directors, and HealthPartners CEO, Named Minnesota’s Executive of the Year

Washington — Mary Brainerd, president and CEO of HealthPartners and chair of the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP) Board of Directors, has been honored as 2007 Executive of the Year by The Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal.  In 2002, Brainerd was named CEO of HealthPartners, Minnesota’s second-largest non-profit health insurer, and in 2007, was elected to chair the Alliance of Community Health Plans Board of Directors. ACHP is a leadership organization that brings together innovative community and regionally-based health plans and provider organizations that are among America’s best at delivering affordable, high-quality coverage and care to their communities.

Ranked by the Buyers Health Care Action Group as one of the state’s top performers in September 2006, HealthPartners employs 9,850 people and covers more than 640,000 members across Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. In the past year, Brainerd initiated a partnership with national plan Cigna Corporation, a national health plan, boosting HealthPartners membership by at least 70,000 people. Six months later, she unveiled plans for a 10-story, $150 million inpatient expansion and renovation project for Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Brainerd’s leadership also has made HealthPartners Research Foundation one of the largest research foundations in the country, funding approximately 250 projects annually. 

In addition to chairing the ACHP Board of Directors, Brainerd also leads the Capital City Partnership’s Board of Directors. Capital City Partnership is a leadership organization dedicated to leveraging public and private resources to revitalize the urban core of St. Paul,Minnesota. Brainerd is also active in the Itasca project, which brings together current and former business and nonprofit leaders to address the Twin Cities economic health.

Brainerd has also been awarded the Medal of Distinction by the College of St. Catherine, has been named one of Minnesota’s Most Influential Women in Business by the Business Journal, has been awarded an Ethical Leadership Award by the University of St. Thomas, and has been named one of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare magazine.
