Pharmacy benefit managers and insurers are more often playing gatekeeper to control the costs of expensive treatments. Priority Health pharmacists are reaching out to patients who take large numbers of medications or see multiple specialists to help reduce unnecessary treatments and opt for generic or cheaper therapies. Priority saved $34 million in its commercial and Medicare businesses last year with this approach, and that number is expected to rise to almost $40 million this year.
