Geisinger Health System plans to expand its ProvenRecovery program in 2019, an ambitious surgery program aimed at reducing post-operation hospital stays and improving surgery recovery rates. The program challenges long-held assumptions about surgery: patients are allowed to eat up to six hours before surgery and are encouraged to be mobile as quickly as possible; physicians also limit the prescription of opioid-based painkillers, sometimes avoiding them altogether. Early versions of the program have been highly successful, slashing post-op hospital stays for neurosurgery patients by 39 percent and for colon surgery patients by 44 percent.
