Geisinger is aiming to ensure proper nutrition prior to surgery as part of its ProvenRecovery program, which aims to speed up the healing process and improve pain management while reducing opioid use. Different from the traditional approach of fasting before surgery, patients are told to consume immune-boosting drinks and allowed to eat a light meal until six hours before surgery. The program has seen promising results with the length of stay for the average neurosurgery patient dropping 39 percent, from 4.3 to 2.62 days, since April 2018.
