Alliance of Leading Health Plans Announces New Name

“Alliance of Community Health Plans” Best Reflects the Organization’s Mission and Membership

Washington, D.C. – An alliance of the nation’s leading not-for-profit and provider-based health plans announced today that it has adopted a new name – Alliance of Community Health Plans – to better reflect its mission and commitment to improving the health of individuals and local communities.

Established in 1984 as “The HMO Group,” the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP) is comprised of 25 leading health plans serving over six million Americans in 26 states. Together, these plans maintain approximately 100,000 physicians in thousands of communities nationwide.

“Our long-standing mission has been to help our member plans improve the health of their patients and communities,” said Daniel Wolfson, President and CEO of ACHP. “We are adopting a name for our alliance that better reflects our values, mission and commitment.”

Alliance membership is predicated on continuous improvements in the delivery of health care and maintenance of a close collaborative partnership between physicians and the health plans. This commitment and partnership helps ensure that the health of patients and communities are served best.

“ACHP is dedicated to continuous improvement in the delivery of health care,” said Arthur R. Goshin, M.D. and ACHP Board Chairman. “To that end, we are working to develop new standards and stimulate our health plans to reach new heights that most effectively serve our patients.”

ACHP was the originator of HEDIS® (Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set) – currently housed at NCQA – a set of performance measures used to evaluate the quality of health plans in areas important to employers and patients. Alliance members routinely score among the highest in performance measurements and national consumer ratings.

ACHP periodically releases white papers and newsletters outlining efforts its member plans have undertaken to improve health care.

Member plans of the Alliance of Community Health Plans include:

AvMed Health Plan, Fallon Community Health Plan, Family Health Plan Cooperative, Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin, Group Health Northwest, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care of New England, Health Alliance Medical Plans, HealthCarePlan, HIP Health Plans (of FL, NY, NJ, and PA), Health Services Medical Corporation, HealthPartners, Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program (of Rocky Mountain, Southeast, Central East, Southwest, Hawaii, CHP/Northeast, and Northwest Divisions), M Plan, and Scott & White Health Plan.
