Hospital Profits Raise Eyebrows as Medical Costs Continue to Soar

- Forbes magazine released a survey of America's most profitable hospitals that revealed that 24 hospitals with more than 200 beds make 25 cents or more of each dollar of patient revenue. The health insurance industry is using the report to counter claims that health insurers’ profits — rather than rising medical costs — are to blame for escalating consumer premiums.
- Forbes brings attention to the fact that hospital charges account for about a third of health care spending, or $718 billion.
- Eleven Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) hospitals make up the Forbes Top 25 list, calculated based on operating income figures that hospitals report to Medicare each year.
