Sebelius to Insurers: It’s Not Too Late to Work Together

  • Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has asked insurance companies to abandon their campaign against the President’s health care bill and instead work with the White House to pass it.
  • Sebelius spoke at an American’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) policy conference, saying that the time is now. She asked that insurance companies disclose their information regarding requests for premium increases as well as data showing costs and other reasons to need higher rates.
  • Karen M. Ignagni, president of America’s Health Insurance Plans, has accepted Sebelius’ request and said AHIP would work with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to develop a standard template for disclosure of premium and cost data. Ingnagni also said AHIP would suggest specific ways to improve the bill by strengthening its control of health costs.
