Obama Invites Republicans to Summit on Health Care

  • President Obama has invited Republicans in Congress to participate in a bipartisan health reform summit to take place later this month. The invitation shows an effort from the President to refocus on health care reform as well as his recognition that he must gain some Republican support for reform legislation to pass.
  • Officials say that President Obama will come to the summit with a merged version of the House and Senate health care bills.
  • Democratic leaders praise the President’s efforts for a bipartisan summit but say they are not prepared to give up on the progress they made last year.
  • The idea for a bipartisan, televised summit is viewed as a way to re-engage Republicans, bring the debate into public view and remind voters of the most popular provisions in the health care bill.
