A new initiative by Group Health Research Institute reconsiders prescription practices for benzodiazepines, medications for sleep and anxiety, which were formerly linked to increased risk of dementia. A joint Group Health-University of Washington Adult Changes in Thought study finds no increased risk of dementia for people using benzodiazepines, although prescribers should remain wary of the medication’s additional side effects, including increased risk of falling and accidents.
