Consumer Reports Magazine recently listed Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center near Portland, Ore., as one of 15 hospitals in the nation to earn top scores in both heart valve and bypass surgery. The ratings are based on patients’ medical record data from 400 hospitals nationwide, provided by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), showing whether patients survived the procedure and how they fared on other measures, including complications. The STS represents physicians who operate on the heart and other organs in the chest. In June, Sunnyside received a three-star rating — the highest possible rating — from STS for the seventh consecutive time.
