Geisinger Community Medical Center (GCMC) launched an electronic intensive care unit (eICU) program on March 4, the first of its kind in Lackawanna County, Pa. Implemented about a year earlier than planned, the program allows nurses and critical care physicians at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville to monitor patients in GCMC’s 17-bed ICU via a live stream and updated data.
Billed as a way to reduce ICU mortality rates and length of stay, the program complements care delivered by nurses and critical care physicians at GCMC. From Danville, health care providers will analyze patient data, such as vital signs, medications, blood results and X-rays. If they identify early-warning signs or notice negative health trends, providers will alert the critical care staff at GCMC.
