“Food Rx” Pairs Good Health, Good Nutrition

A CareOregon pilot project, Food Rx, encourages people on tight budgets to make healthy food choices by giving them a $15 food “prescription” at their doctor appointments. The vouchers can be used at a trolley called My Street Grocery, which is decked out as a mini grocery store and sits in doctors’ office parking lots in Portland, Ore.

Tom Wunderlich, public policy manager at CareOregon, describes Food Rx as a conversation-starter between health professionals and their patients about good nutrition. It is a six-week pilot project, after which CareOregon will analyze the results and decide how best to continue or expand it.
