Colon Cancer Screening Doubles With New E-Health Record Use

A randomized trial conducted by the Group Health Research Institute, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, shows cost savings and improved screening rates with the use of “automated” interventions and care. Researchers used electronic health records to identify Group Health patients who were not screened regularly for cancer of the colon and rectum. This centralized, automated approach doubled these patients’ rates of on-time screening — and saved health costs — over two years.
