Independent Health President and CEO Michael Cropp, M.D., views the new Internet-fueled products offered by health insurers as the future of his business. Cropp says concerns about losing ground to larger competitors helped prompt the recent partnership between his company and Capital District Physicians Health Plan (CDPHP). “We clearly don’t have the scale of some of the big national players when it comes to the investments that need to be made,” Cropp said. While the two nonprofit insurers plan to remain independent, Cropp said the new partnership seeks to address that technology gap, along with other issues. John Bennett, president and CEO of CDPHP, agreed that “economies of scale” played a role in starting the partnership between the two employers, which combined have about 825,000 members.
