Cancellation of Bundled-payment Models Reflects White House’s Stance on Balue-based Care

The cancellation of two mandatory bundled payment models and scale back on a third could make it more difficult for CMS to encourage value-based care among providers. While CMS said it was ending the programs because the rules were too burdensome, some experts believe the decision could be viewed as a preference for fee-for-service. Dr. John Bulger, Chief Medical Officer for Geisinger Health Plan, said some doctors could interpret the move as getting a pass and questions if enough providers will move away from fee-for-service in favor of value-based care for Medicare.
