Washington, D.C. — The Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP) today announced that one of its member plans, HealthPartners, will participate in a new electronic health information exchange with other leading health care organizations in Minnesota. Through this exchange, clinical information among provider and payer will be shared electronically. Doctors will thus obtain medical information about a specific patient more quickly and cost-effectively than would be the case by relying on phone, facsimile, couriers, or mail.
Initially, the Minnesota Health Information Exchange will provide the connectivity needed to obtain medication histories, lab orders and test results across health systems. Future electronically based services will include radiology reports,Minnesota
Department of Health disease surveillance reporting, and electronic prescriptions, which will eliminate the need for doctors to write prescription orders by hand.
“We are proud that HealthPartners is participating in this important effort” said Patricia Smith, ACHP’s CEO. “ACHP and its member plans are committed to improving health care, and we believe that the electronic exchange of information can dramatically improve health outcomes by providing for better coordination of medical care between providers. All providers should be on the same page when treating a patient and the Minnesota Health Information Exchange will go a long way towards helping providers achieve this goal.”
