The Alliance of Community Health Plans applauds the appointment of Don Berwick, MD, to serve in the critical role as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Dr. Berwick has shown a sustained commitment to improving our nation’s health care system by focusing on the “Triple Aim” goals – better health, better care, at a lower cost.
Dr. Berwick’s experience as founder of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), a Harvard professor and practicing physician make him well suited for the CMS Administrator’s role in implementing the Affordable Care Act. He has a long history of leading health care delivery system transformations and a commitment to putting the patient at the center of health care decisions.
“Dr. Berwick has inspired the health care community to work toward improving the health of all Americans, as well as their health care. He has helped communities and health care systems shape and implement goals of higher performance, higher quality, and greater affordability,” says ACHP President and CEO Patricia Smith. “His hands-on experience will be a great asset to the monumental work of implementing health care reform that accomplishes these goals.”
