Alliance Member Plans Receive Top Rankings from Newsweek Magazine

Washington, D.C. – One third of the top-ranked health plans in a national study released Monday belongs to the Alliance of Community Health Plans. ACHP plans comprise ten of the top 30 highest performing plans in Newsweek Magazine’s annual managed care survey. The Newsweek ranking was based on criteria such as managed care plans’ services, access, member satisfaction and qualifications of providers.

“We are proud that such a disproportionate number of ACHP members lead Newsweek’s rankings,” said Dan Wolfson, president and CEO of ACHP. “The real winners here are the communities and patients who benefit from these top notch plans.”

Wolfson said the Newsweek findings confirm the continuing success of ACHP plans in facilitating quality care. “Our health plans perform well because of the close collaborative relationships between physicians and health plans that build patient trust,” Wolfson noted

Many of the performance ratings used in evaluations like the one published in Newsweek are based on the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS), today’s most reliable system for measuring the effectiveness of health plans. ACHP and its plans originated the development of HEDIS, the same measurement system now housed at the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). “ACHP member plans have advanced the concept of accountability through accreditation and performance measurement. Newsweek’s survey shows that accountability in action,” Wolfson said.

The 10 ACHP plans receiving Newsweek’s top 30 rankings include:

  • Fallon Community Health Plan
  • Harvard Pilgrim Health Care
  • Univera Health Care (formerly Health Care Plan)
  • Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Hawaii
  • HealthPartners
  • Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Colorado
  • Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Northeast
  • Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States
  • Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Ohio
  • Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound

ACHP (##SITE_ROOT##) is a national alliance of integrated, non-investor-owned and provider-based health plans. Established in 1984, ACHP’s mission is to support member plans’ efforts to improve the health of their members and the communities they serve.
