Alliance Member Plans Receive Top Rankings From Newsweek Magazine

Washington, D.C. – Fifteen of the 32 top performing plans in Newsweek Magazine’s annual survey of managed care plans’ performance (September 28, 1998 issue) are members of the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP). Newsweek’s rankings were based on surveys of more than 200 managed care plans about their services, evaluating their performance in maintaining members’ health, treating illness, and managing chronic illness.

“ACHP member plans have a mission to improve the health of their members and communities. The Newsweek findings illustrate the commitment our plans have to that mission,” stated Daniel Wolfson, President and CEO of ACHP. “This new data shows once again the importance of a close, collaborative partnership between patients, their physicians, and their health plan.”

ACHP plans repeatedly score among the best in performance measures and national consumer ratings such as the Newsweek survey. Many of the performance ratings used in evaluations like the one published in Newsweek are based on the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS), today’s most reliable system for measuring the effectiveness of health plans. ACHP spearheaded the development of HEDIS, the same measurement system used by employers and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

The 15 ACHP plans receiving top rankings include:

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care
Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound
Fallon Community Health Plan
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Hawaii
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Ohio
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan – Northeast
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Colorado
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan – Northwest
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Georgia
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of North Carolina
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan – Mid-Atlantic
Scott & White Health Plan
Group Health Northwest
Health Alliance Plan

“We are proud that such a disproportionate number of ACHP members rank so highly in Newsweek’s survey. This reflects our leadership position in the marketplace in the areas of quality and patient satisfaction,” Wolfson added.

Established in 1984, ACHP, formerly The HMO Group, is a national alliance of 26 non-profit and provider-sponsored health plans.
