WASHINGTON, D.C. -Jack Ebeler, President and CEO of the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP), commemorated the national launch today of “Cover the Uninsured Week” by issuing the following statement:
“Cover the Uninsured Week brings needed attention to one of the most pressing issues facing our nation. 46 million people, including 8 million children, are uninsured in theUnited States.
“The consequences are staggering. The uninsured are less likely to receive preventive care, suffer high rates of serious illness, and often incur crippling medical debt. They have a greater risk of dying than insured Americans: The Institute of Medicine projects that 18,000 deaths each year can be attributed to the consequences of lack of coverage.
“Increasing the number of insured will improve health care quality, reduce costs, and make a meaningful difference in the quality of life of many Americans.”
