The Director, Clinical Innovation is the leading clinical thinker for ACHP, guiding alliance efforts in promoting the Triple Aim at our member plans and in public policy. This senior executive collaborates with medical, pharmacy and quality leaders in ACHP organizations to drive higher performance in health care delivery, and to implement programs that share best practices.  The Director, Clinical Innovation has a passion for improving the health of communities, not only through medical care but broader interventions relating to social determinants of health.

He/she is the leading spokesperson for ACHP on clinical issues focused on health care transformation, provider partnerships, affordability and the importance of community benefit investment. The Director is a key strategist – and works closely with the CEO and plan medical directors — to differentiate non-profit community health plans by documenting their unique mission and superior health outcomes.

As the leader of ACHP’s clinical innovation team, this individual is responsible for a portfolio of research and learning initiatives around cutting edge topics, and networks intensively with experts in the field to identify emerging ideas and challenges. Successful candidates will be skilled at leading through influence, be highly collaborative and understand the regulatory environment. This individual must be equally comfortable interacting with C-suite executives, data analysts and junior staffers.

In addition to overseeing the clinical innovation staff, the Director works closely with the advocacy and market competitiveness teams at ACHP to advance the policy agenda of nonprofit, community-based health plans.


  • Foster strong relationships with senior leaders from member plans and the clinical innovation team to advance performance improvement programs and value-based care.
  • Serve as the in-house expert on care delivery models, affordability and population health in community-based health plans.
  • Work with member plans’ key leaders to identify clinical priorities and rigorous performance improvement strategies to drive the future success and competitiveness of regional health plans.
  • Oversee implementation of existing research grant and potentially secure others in the future.
  • Develop and sustain external information networks of practitioners and thought leaders to support program development and foster dissemination of innovations and ideas.
  • Serve as an expert resource to the ACHP Board on the business implications of various clinical strategies such as low-value care, formulary optimization, provider partnerships and alternative payment models.
  • Accountable for ACHP’s clinical learning collaboratives and plays a major, substantive role in the annual Symposium including identifying and recruiting top tier guest speakers, developing stimulating agendas, facilitating sessions and disseminating insights.
  • Devises collective efforts to make coverage and care more affordably through addressing the major cost drivers in today’s health care system, including pharmacy.
  • Leads the ACHP clinical innovation team, which is responsible for research, programming and communications in the area of clinical performance, patient experience, delivery transformation and community benefit programs.
  • Joins the ACHP CEO and other senior leaders in articulating our advocacy agenda to policymakers in the administration and on Capitol Hill.
  • Advises the CEO and other senior leaders on ways to position ACHP and its member plans as highly-regarded leaders in the areas of quality and affordability.


  • Advanced degree (MD, RN, PharmD) required; active license preferred
  • Deep understanding of health plans’ operations, particularly provider-aligned, non-profit plans
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in the fields of clinical performance improvement, population health management or health program administration
  • 2+ years management experience, preferably in health plans
  • Knowledge about government health programs such as Medicaid and Medicare Advantage
  • Clinical experience, preferably in a group practice using modern tools such as an electronic medical record; primary care experience preferable
  • Strong team player, demonstrated success in working in cross-functional teams, collaborating with clinical and non-clinical staff
  • Proven skills in effectively partnering with senior executives including CEOs and CMOs of major health care organizations
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including social media; published in peer-reviewed and mainstream publications highly desired
  • Ability to see and apply big picture aspects of health care policy to daily ACHP program design including webinars, in-person meetings, publications and research initiatives

Additional Skills:
Experience overseeing grant-writing and management
Expertise in the health care quality movement and/or alternative payment efforts
Adept with emerging technologies such as virtual visits, asynchronous patient-provider communications
